BAT CONTROL

Bat Control

What you should know about Bats

Bat control in Florida can be difficult because bats are social creatures that live in colonies that range from 20 to 200 strong. Florida has two common species of bats: the big brown bat and the little brown bat. Unfortunately, both the big and little brown bats are small enough to fit through crawl spaces like attics and underneath homes.

Once a colony establishes, it becomes difficult to rid the home of these pests. Because bats are known rabies carriers, it is vital that professionals are called as soon as signs of bats in your home pop up. Having a base knowledge of these species can help you identify your problem.

Little Brown Bat

The little brown bat is not related to the big brown bat. They weigh approximately half an ounce and can be up to 4 inches long. Like the big brown bat, their predators include owls, weasels, frogs and racoons. They occupy buildings, storm drains, tree cavities and caves. Their colonies tend to be larger than the big brown bat.

Big Brown Bat

Big brown bats have a wingspan of 32 to 35 cm and weigh approximately ½ to 1 pound. Colonies will roost in caves, storm drains, tree cavities and buildings. They are insectivores that feed on insects like beetles, flies and cockroaches. They have a few common predators like owls, weasels and bullfrogs.

Bat Control

To the Florida homeowner, bat control means bat removal. It is illegal to kill bats in Florida because they are protected by the Florida Wildlife Conservation. Bats have greatly reduced the number of mosquitos and other common pests in Florida. However, having them in your home will cause a significant amount of damage from the amount of fecal waste they produce.
