Cricket Control

What you should know about Crickets

Cricket control starts with education. Crickets are one of the least damaging pests to invade your home but they can interrupt your sleep and if not addressed will eat through fabric.

Because crickets thrive on humid environments, Florida is a great habitat for them. Crickets do not carry diseases but are nonetheless annoying for a homeowner to deal with. Infestations can happen suddenly, so prevention and a on call pest control company is a must for homeowners.

What are crickets?

Crickets are between 0.2 and 2 inches long. They are omnivorous and have cylindrical bodies. Even though crickets have wings, they do not fly. They use jerky movements to jump short distances.

Crickets feed on plants, fungi and other insects. When they’re inside a home they can eat fabric, upholstery and paper products. Male crickets produce a chirping sound by rubbing their wings together. This is to attract a mate and its common to hear them in more warm, humid months.

Male and female crickets have auditory organs on their forelegs. Their sensitivity to vibrations in sound makes them adept at hiding and evading predators. Female crickets will lay over 100 eggs in their life cycle. This makes infestations more likely in humid, warm environments.

How do I know If I have an infestation?

Rainstorms can draw these pests inside. While it is common to see one or two crickets inside your home, seeing more could be an indication of an infestation.

A tell-tale sign of an infestation are large holes in upholstery or clothing. Crickets are attracted to certain fabrics like silk, wool and cotton. If you are seeing large holes in your clothing, it is best to wash them because crickets are also attracted to the smell of perspiration.

Cricket Control and Prevention

Prevention starts with changing out your bright white outdoor lights to a yellow hue. Raking leaves and clearing debris can prevent crickets from nesting in the yard. Making sure your garage or attic is cleaned and organized is also a prevention tool.

However, if you believe you have an infestation, calling EZ Pest Control right away is the best course of action. Crickets are very difficult to get rid of once they have established a breeding ground and females have begun to lay eggs.

We can have a qualified inspector at your home identify the severity of the pest problem and prescribe a treatment plan so that you can be at ease in your home.
